The Lyon / Rhône-Alpes corridor

Moving to Lyon / Rhône-Alpes
— what we know about it

Lyon is France's second city economically and a substantial destination for UK corporate relocations into the French banking, biotech, and chemicals sectors. The Lyon centre — Presqu'île, Vieux-Lyon, the Croix-Rousse — has listed-building constraints in the medieval and Renaissance quarters; modern apartment stock at Confluence and Part-Dieu is straightforward. The Lyon-area suburbs (Villeurbanne, Caluire-et-Cuire, Écully, Tassin-la-Demi-Lune) accommodate the corporate-relocation market.

The wider Rhône-Alpes region — Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes since the 2016 reform, but functionally still "Rhône-Alpes" for most expats — covers a large area: from the Rhône valley through to the French Alps, the Haute-Savoie around Lake Geneva, the Drôme to the south, and the Ardèche to the southwest. Each subregion has different move characteristics.

The Alps are the destination where weather and seasonality matter most. Chamonix, Megève, Courchevel, Méribel, Val d'Isère, Tignes — ski-resort destinations have ski-season-versus-summer-season scheduling considerations. Move-day timing during peak ski weeks (late December, late February through Easter) is severely constrained by tourist traffic on the Alpine corridors. We strongly recommend April-October scheduling for ski-resort moves; outside that window, the practicalities tighten considerably.

Annecy and Lake Geneva-adjacent destinations (Évian, Thonon-les-Bains, the Pays de Gex around Geneva's French periphery) host a substantial UK community. The Geneva-cross-border profile — UK households on Geneva tech-and-finance postings, living in France for affordability and commuting daily — is a recurring booking. The Pays de Gex specifically (Ferney-Voltaire, Saint-Genis-Pouilly, Divonne-les-Bains) sees this profile heavily.

Grenoble, the Alpine valley capital, is a research-and-tech-economy destination. UK academic moves to the Grenoble universities and research institutions are routine. The Drôme to the south of Lyon hosts a more rural-retirement profile (the Drôme provençale we cover separately under Provence; the Drôme valley proper around Valence and Crest is a different character). The Ardèche, on the western side of the Rhône, hosts a smaller but distinctive UK community in the gorges du Doubs and the Ardèche villages.
