Why the origin matters more than people expect

Customers tend to think of a France move as beginning at the Channel. In practice it begins on your street, and where that street is changes the whole shape of the job — which port is worth using, whether your load can share a vehicle, and how much of the timetable we get to choose.

The west country and the south west unlock something the rest of the UK does not: the Plymouth and Portsmouth sailings, which put the lorry ashore in Brittany or Normandy with most of the French road leg already gone. For the Midlands, the north and Scotland that advantage disappears — the drive to a western port costs more than the crossing saves — so those loads run to the Channel and usually travel consolidated with other northern pickups.

The full comparison — which crossing suits which origin, and what each one trades away — is set out in the ferry versus Eurotunnel guide. Then there is the street itself. A terrace with no loading bay, a lift with a weight limit, a lane a full-size lorry cannot turn into: these change the vehicle, the crew and sometimes the date. Finding them out at survey is the entire point of having one.
